Claude or Google Gemini: which one for a team that writes and reports?

Claude is Anthropic's assistant: chat, projects, Office file creation, Cowork for scheduled tasks and Claude Code. Gemini is Google's assistant: a standalone app with Deep Research and NotebookLM, plus Gemini built into Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Slides on Workspace plans. The deciding question is your office suite. Pick Claude if…

  • Your company runs Microsoft 365 or no suite at all. Claude returns .docx, .xlsx and .pptx that open anywhere.
  • You want one person to schedule an unattended task, like a weekly readout deck, and review the result. That is Cowork.
  • Your work is long: reports, contracts, briefs. Reviews consistently rate Claude higher on long-form writing.

Pick Google Gemini if…

  • Your team already lives in Gmail, Docs and Sheets. Gemini is in the sidebar and needs no new tool.
  • You need EU data regions on a company plan. Workspace Business Standard and up include them; Anthropic plans do not.
  • Research is the main job. Deep Research reads hundreds of pages and can search your own Drive and Gmail alongside the web.

Where each one falls short

Claude

  • Usage caps shared across chat, Cowork and Claude Code, with five-hour and weekly limits; the most common complaint in reviews.
  • No EU residency on any Anthropic plan. Consumer plans use chats for training unless you opt out; Team and Enterprise do not.

Google Gemini

  • EU residency on Gemini Enterprise excludes key features: Gemini 3.1 Pro, web grounding and image generation are not EU-resident, and Google recommends the global location unless residency is mandated.
  • The consumer Gemini app has no data processing addendum; prompts may be human-reviewed and used for training by default. Reviews also note inconsistent output and hallucinated numbers.

Claude or Google Gemini: the verdict

If you are on Google Workspace, Gemini is the sensible default: it is already in your documents and EU data regions come with Business Standard. If you are on Microsoft or want portable Office files and scheduled unattended tasks, Claude is the stronger tool, but you carry US hosting and usage caps.

A third option

If you want the work done, not a chat window

Both tools give one person a place to prompt. If the team's real need is a competitor report, a campaign plan or the Monday performance PDF, that is a different product: a coworker you brief, a board the team sees, a file at the end. Claude vs Google Gemini: questions

Is Gemini free with Google Workspace?+

Yes. Since March 2025 Gemini is bundled into Workspace plans. Starter (CHF 7) gets Gemini in Gmail and the app; Standard (CHF 14) and Plus (CHF 22) add Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet and Chat.

Which one is safer for EU personal data?+

Workspace with Gemini: it has a DPA, no training on your data, and EU data regions from Business Standard. Claude Team and Enterprise have a DPA but store data in the US. Avoid the consumer Gemini app for company data.

Can Claude work inside Google Docs?+

Not natively. Claude creates and edits files you download or connect via Drive connectors. Gemini edits Docs and Sheets in place.

Where does Sokosumi fit?+
