Pick OpenAI Codex if…

  • Your company already pays for ChatGPT Business or Enterprise. Codex is in the seat at no extra cost.
  • You run many parallel tasks and care about token cost. Reviews put Codex at several times the token efficiency of Claude Code.
  • You need EU data residency and have an Enterprise contract.

Pick Claude Code if…

  • Code quality on hard, multi-file work matters most. Blind reviews cited in 2026 comparisons favour Claude Code about two to one.
  • You want the agent scripted into CI, Slack and scheduled routines from day one.
  • One subscription should also cover Claude chat and Cowork for the same person.

Where each one falls short

OpenAI Codex

  • Reviews report erratic behaviour in long sessions and weaker front-end output than Claude Code.
  • EU residency needs ChatGPT Enterprise; Business seats and Plus store data in the US. OpenAI blocks automated reads of its pricing page, so plan prices here rely on dated third-party trackers.

Claude Code

  • Rate limits are the top complaint: five-hour and weekly caps shared with chat, and Pro users hit them routinely; the current higher limits are a temporary boost.
  • No EU residency on Anthropic's own plans, and the Team Standard seat excludes Claude Code; you need Premium at $100–125.

OpenAI Codex or Claude Code: the verdict

If your company already licenses ChatGPT, Codex is free to try and cheaper to run at volume, with EU residency on Enterprise. If code quality on hard tasks and deep automation matter more than cost, Claude Code wins, but you accept usage caps and US hosting. Many developers now run both.

A third option

OpenAI Codex vs Claude Code: questions

Is Codex really free?+

It is included in every ChatGPT plan, including Free, and shares that plan's usage. Heavy use needs Plus, Pro or credits. There is no separate Codex subscription.

What does a team of five pay?+

Codex: five ChatGPT Business seats at $20 annual, $100 a month. Claude Code: five Team Premium seats at $100 annual, $500 a month. Claude's Premium seat includes far more usage than a Business seat, so compare included work, not just price.

Which one keeps code in the EU?+

Codex through ChatGPT Enterprise with Europe residency, or through the API with residency set. Claude Code only via AWS Bedrock Frankfurt or Vertex AI EU with your own API key; not on Anthropic's own plans.

Where does Sokosumi fit?+
